Amy Chua lined up to help create a beloved community on BYU Campus

PROVO, Utah, Feb. 15, 2022-- Reaching into overlooked cracks and forgotten corners to care for the marginalized and oppressed has been a high priority for Yale Law professor Amy Chua, who will be delivering a special address at the next Brigham Young University Forum address.

Chua will be giving her address at 11:05 a.m. on March 29, 2022. The forum address will be broadcast on BYUtv, BYU radio, and will be available to view on demand after it airs.

The theme for this year’s forum calendar is Becoming a Beloved Community. Chua has significant insight to contribute to this conversation given her experience as a clerk for a U.S. Supreme Court Justice in Washington, D.C., as an attorney, an author, and a mother.

Her experience as a member of several commonly marginalized groups has made Chua familiar with hardship, and she has risen above. She has lived in communities that are oppressive and harmful, and will share what changes need to be made to foster a beloved community. Part of this beloved community will include reaching out to the marginalized in ways that are unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

Speaking to this fact, Chua said, “Everything I've ever done that's valuable is something I was afraid to try.”

Named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, Chua is the author of The New York Times best-seller, "World on Fire: How exporting free market democracy breeds ethnic hatred and global instability.” Her book has earned accolades in various spheres and has made her a thought leader in policy reforms and inclusion, earning her live interviews on major news channels and headlines on major news sites.

Shane Reese, vice president of BYU, said, “Through the lens of the injustice and inequality, she has experienced firsthand that there is obvious work to be done to establish fairness and belonging for all individuals in society.”

Tune in to hear more about Chua’s experience as she inspires the development of a beloved community.
